Our engagement was beautiful, but bittersweet. Mom had passed away only 3
weeks before I was planning to propose. In fact, the day before she passed
away I put the deposit down on the ring. My mom was so excited for the
event that she made me promise to wait until she returned from her 3 week
trip to visit family. So, Mom and I came up with the plan that I was to propose the day she returned from her vacation. Although it was
difficult to have such an important moment now without my mom, it was
important to me to keep the engagement on the same day as she knew it
would happen. My mom loved Erin and wouldn't want me to postpone what we
were both so looking forward to.

So, I told Erin that I wanted a date night
with her and made plans for dinner. However, before dinner I decided
to make one important stop. We went to a small park on the cliffs of
Laguna Beach that looks out into the ocean and a private beach. Standing
out on the cliffs we talked and laughed, as we always do, but that’s
exactly our style. And it helped pass the time while I was waiting for the ideal moment with Erin. It was nearly sunset and just the
perfect time of day when I bent down on one knee and asked her to
marry me. She was so excited she just kept repeating "oh my God" and
actually forgot to say "yes." Then all at once she shouted "YES!" and I
placed the ring on her finger.

I
then whisked her off to dinner at the sushi restaurant where we had our
first date. I have been going to this restaurant since I was 10 years old
and the owners and sushi chefs know me well. We walked in, announced our
engagement, and shared a saki toast with the restaurant.
And it still wasn't over...after a quick dinner we were rushed back to the
house where I had a small surprise engagement party waiting for us with
champagne and a group of our closest friends.
