Continuing the Tradition of a Great Man

Dan's Life

Dan Scanlon was born in Mesa, Arizona on February 8th, 1947. He moved with his family several times before settling in San Clemente California, which he spent the majority of his childhood. Dan always knew that he wanted to teach. He graduated from high school and began a mathematics degree at the university of California Irvine. During this time he joined the Future Teachers of America and taught a few days a week at the high school from which he had just graduated. Dan was very intelligent and always found learning to be second nature. He hardly even needed to study and still managed to earn straight A's. His fellow students envied his easy mastery of math and science. On June 14th, 1969 Dan graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics. He was in the first graduating class of UCI. He later went on to complete a Masters of Mathematics and nearly completely his doctorate when he chose to stop his education with what he called his "ABD" degree (All But Dissertation) in 1971.

Dan was truly the strong silent type. He love of friends and family was displayed though his actions and less so though his words. His generosity towards his daughter, colleagues, students, friends, and fellow referees demonstrated his devotion. Dan was always willing to take on more than his fair share and always did so. In his 32 years at Orange Coast College, his responsibilities grew from part-time tutor in the math lab to head of the entire mathematics department. During that time, he was a friend and problem solver and was on call for the department.

He also enjoyed his time as a volunteer AYSO referee. He excelled as a referee, as he did with all things he put his mind to, becoming an instructor of other referees. Dan Scanlon was a teacher in every aspect of his life.

Dan is missed so very much. As the family, friends, and colleagues of Dan we can only hope to tackle the jobs and responsibilities that came so easily to such a brilliant man.

The Daniel E. Scanlon Memorial Award

This Award honors one deserving Mathematics student per year for earning the title of "most dedicated." This award was created to recognized the student that loves math and always desires to learn more. Daniel Scanlon was a prominent figure in the OCC Mathematics department . He began his career in 1973 as head of the math lab and sadly his career ended in 2005 when he passed away at the age of 58. Over the course of his thirty-two year career at OCC he held the position of Professor of Calculus and finally also became the Chair of the Math Department.

Dan devoted his life to teaching and always made a special effort for those who had a passion and desire to succeed in Math. He enjoyed helping students with questions during his office hours and was happy to out of his way to work with those who were devoted to understanding math and excelling in his class. It is for this reason that the Daniel E. Scanlon Memorial Award honors the most dedicated math student. Dan's life was cut unexpectedly short before we were ready to lose him. Therefore, those who love Dan created this award to continue Dan's legacy of helping those passionate and deserving students that he dedicated his life and career to mentoring.

How it Works

The Dan Scanlon Fund collect donations for the Daniel E. Scanlon Memorial Award. This award is presented annually at the Orange Coast Collect Honors night in May.  OCC has a long tradition of providing scholarships for students. 100% of all donations go directly to OCC and all monies are handled by them. Every year the interest from this minimum $10,000 fund (5% or $500) will be awarded, thus making this an annual award to continue on in his name indefinitely.
